Hello all! I never really introduced myself when I joined this website. I'm nightshade4lovers or N. I. Burn and I'm in my twenties. I'm from Canada and my whole life I've had the ability to see and hear spirits, ghosts, dead people, whatever you wish to call them.
My story begins in my childhood home. I can no longer remember my age, but it could be as young as 3. I'd lie in bed at night, eyes focussed on the ceiling as I tried to ignore the voices that were arguing in my room. I can remember that my parents were asleep and this was before I had siblings. I'd race to the window and look down to the parking lot below. I'd never see anybody, but the voices would continue to speak behind me. As I got older, I learned the ability to block out the voices lest I go crazy.
As I child I had a morbid interest in the macabre. I liked ghosts and horror stories despite the fact that they terrified me. My parents told me stories of the one time they saw the same ghost after their close friend died in a car crash. Little did they know at the time that I was seeing things myself.
One night, I spent the night at my best friend's house. She left the house for an hour or so and left me alone in her house. While she was gone, I could hear noises in the living room and I'd see movement coming from the corner of the room. When she came home, I told her of the things I had seen. She was shocked. She told me that her dead grandfather's favourite hat sat atop the bookcase in that corner. He'd only died a few months before that.
When I was almost ten years old, my parents decided to move us out of the dangerous city and into a small rural town. Odd things happened from the start. My younger brother had never met my great grandfather, and had never seen a picture of him as we had packed many pictures away shortly after he had died. One morning my brother runs terrified to my mother and tells him of the strange man that hung over his bed that night. He describes the man: an old man, hunched over, thin and strict looking with glasses on a string and a plaid shirt buttoned right up to the neck. My mother was a little freaked out as the description was similar to that of my great grandfather, but the day she unpacked the family photos and my brother pointed at my great grandfather and said "That's the man who watches me when I sleep," my mother knew that we had a special talent.
It appeared, over time, that my great grandfather was just coming to meet the great grandson he had never known, but our home still held some secrets. Over the years we have seen shadow people and mists spanning the entire home. The three most prominent encounters have seemed to prove that we are not alone in our family home.
One day, my parents were sitting in the kitchen, waiting for the bus to bring me and my siblings home. Suddenly, a blood curdling scream pierces the air. It appeared to be emanating from my bedroom. My parents searched the property, but could not find a source from the noise. It still baffles them to this day. Yet, I may have an answer.
I was very depressed in high school, suicidal even. At my lowest point, I was awoken in the middle of the night. I could feel a warmth by my feet. When I opened my eyes, I found that I was not alone. A woman sat at the end of my bed. She had long black hair, a black nightgown and slippers and unnaturally grey skin. When she turned her head to look at me there was a blank, flat space where her face should be. She then lifted her hand and reached out towards me before disappearing. She left a dent in the bedding and a warmth that radiated throughout the entire bed. The next morning, I awoke and suddenly life didn't seem so dark. I still have depression issues, but they have never gotten that bad again. Sometimes, when I feel really down I can see that woman in my room, but she's never appeared as close as she did that night. I don't believe she is my guardian angel, but I think she may have died on this property in a negative situation. She seems to understand me though and I've grown found of her. However, there seems to be another spirit here that doesn't quite agree with her. I think he may be her husband or father. And I can feel him in this house. I think that may be who may mother heard in this one instance.
I was now in high school and took a different bus than my younger siblings. I was sitting in the kitchen with my father when my mother bursts into the room. She asks us if we were in the living room just now. We had not left the kitchen and we told her that. She then explained that she was folding laundry in her room when somebody opened the living room door, slammed it and stomped up the stairs. She heard my door open and slam shut. I had left more door open and it was still open when I went to check my room. Nobody was there.
I believe that the male spirit is the spirit we hear the most often. I've seen him, as his my sister and brother, outside in our driveway. He's driven my dogs crazy on occassion. He also storms around upstairs in heavy boots and occassionally slams the living room door, whereas his female counterpart is more considerate. In fact, she checks on us at night when we sleep. Even when my best friend moved in with us, she adjusted and began checking on my best friend too. She's been known to scare people who stay in our spare room, which used to be my best friend's room when she lived with us. She's also checked in on us when we were doing crafts in the spare room.
Those two seem to be the most prominent spirits. But in our new basement, which was built a year before we moved in, my younger sister and I have seen and heard close to 30 different spirits. In fact, one of them has cheered my sister up when she was depressed by reminding her that he still likes her. But my home is not the only place I've seen spirits. In fact, I have seen spirits everywhere. I've learned a trick over time to block most spirits out and I have to focus if I want to see them, but there have always been a few strong enough to show themselves to me anyway.
Before my best friend moved in with us, she lived in a haunted house a few streets down from my home. I spent many nights there and had seen about 15 different spirits. Some pleasant and some quite terrifying. My high school was haunted and I've seen many odd things in public. I'm sure everyone will learn all about these odd sightings, as I love to share them. Unfortunately, I have enough stories to fill a full novel and I do plan to write a novel about my experiences one day, but there are too many stories to share in one post. Besides, I need to save some stories for another time.
You may have read some of my stories on other sites, also one of my friends used to be on this website and she told me she had posted one of my experiences here. Hopefully, I am not repeating anything you may have already heard. I apologize if you have read anything here already. I also apologize for such a long post, but I'm sure you've all enjoyed it. I'm sure I'll enjoy this website in the future. I love to hear about supernatural experiences. I may usually see spirits, but I have many other odd experiences to share. It appears I'm a sensitive and I'd love to meet others like myself. I'm sure we'll get along great.

| Sorry so long since I been here. The shooting at Ft. Hood revealed Ft.Bragg my present station was on a terrorist hit list so things have been upside down here lately. I have seen over the last few months 3 people I know for a fact died in Iraq. One I knew from my platoon and the other 2 I knew from working with them. I'm stateside now but the 1 I knew I have seen on the parade ground and the other 2 I have seen on the avenue or mess hall. I'm not psychic and have never had paranormal experiences that I know of so I don't know why this is happening now. I'm starting to think it is just my imagination. So nightshade if you see dead people I don't know why. I don't know why ghosts make themselves known to some and not all. I do know I wish it would stop.

Good Morning, Nightshade,
It seems you and your family are remarkably sensitive, have had far more than your share of psychic experiences, and are willing to share them with the world. I would love to read them.. and yes, there does seem to be enough material there for a novel.
People often wonder if psychic abilities run in families.. I think absolutely it does.
I quite look forward to reading more from you, since you are a talented writer to boot!

Hi Tim!
Goodness, there have been times when I could describe my life as being 'upsidedown', but being on a terrorist hit list has never been among them. This is unimaginable to most of us. But, for people serving in the military and their families, this is a time of extreme anxiety. It is no wonder that for those with even a smidgen of psychic ability, would see it blossom at this time.
I suspect the spirits of soldiers who have died in the current wars do indeed remain close to things military, such as parades and the like, and to their fellow soldiers. I expect too that the vile shootings in Fort Hood may have triggered hauntings that would not normally have happened.
I would wager that your experiences are not unique, that in times such as this when there are wars raging and soldiers dying, military people see and experience things they never could have imagined.
I wish you well.
Muriel!

Putting yourself through extreme stress is one way to awaken it, yes. Edit: Thank you, Nightshade, for posting your story.

Tim,
I know that many people have their reasons for seeing ghosts or spirits. My family may have it in our genetics as MurLag has suggested. Of course, there are exceptions to any rule. A few of my friends can see spirits and to this date we still can't figure out why, but most people have a reason.
Stress, as has been mentioned already, is the leading cause of seeing ghosts when you previously had been unable to. Sometimes, though, in situations like your own, it could be that you are surrounded by death. An area where you are surrounded by death -- or sometimes when a person is surrounded by death -- there appears almost like a window into the paranormal. In this case, you may be able to see ghosts or spirits the rest of your life.
However, it may just be that stress has allowed a brief viewing into the spirit world. Only time will tell.

Have you considered talking with a professor of psychology?
(I just realised that must sound rude to people other than timhowellssgt and myself, we know what I am talking about. An "inside joke")

| First xodibox, this kind of talk could be damaging to my career, so I'm not about to talk to a shrink. Secondly, I don't know you therefore we could not have an "inside joke". And third, I don't have a sense of humor. I want to thank all of you for your advice and accept it as well intentioned and sincere. I have dealt with a lot in my life and will deal with this as well. Thank you all again.

tim,
while stationed in iraq i used to have dreams taht would "forcast" some things that would happen. it was never anything major, but always relvant to my experiences there. it would be about a week ahead. i could also feel every attack about 5 minutes before the alarm would go off and somehow just know its about to happen. i have never seen anything. and it was never anything that scared me and somethign that i could just brush off... but now that i've gotten into some dark terretory. i also, like you, wish it would stop. and as a soon to be prior military member i do agree that it is out of the question to see a shrink. they may encourage it and whatnot, but in all reality it does ruin your career and the word does get around, and people do treat you differently.
good luck

| haunted thank you for your service and like you i and many others realize our sense of self protection rises in situations like war. I have been to Iraq 3 times and leave in March for Afghanistan. You begin to sense danger almost smell it as it were. You suddenly begin to walk slower, look around more , you tense up and know something is about to happen. Anyway, I'll deal with this thing ,it isn't hurting me, just curious why I see these 3 individuals and no one else. Thanks again.

NightShade,
Since you see ghost so often and so clearly, I have a few questions for you:
1. Do you see them as well as you do live people, or are they sort of transparent? 2. Do they always walk with their feet moving, do they float, or both? I've seen silhouette figures of ghosts, but they usually travel in an even pace across the room. Never saw them walking with a beat like we do. 3. Have you ever seen them float, fly, hover, go throught roofs? 4. Do you ever see them as spheres, or do they just appear that way to other people?
Thanks in advance.

| When I see these 3 individuals I see them as clearly as I see anyone around me. I have never seen them float or go thru walls or anything like that. I have never in my life seen ghosts before this or really given the paranormal a second thought other than enjoying a good spook movie. There appearance doesn't frighten me ,I just wish I knew why I see them. These sightings have become a common ocurrence and I just go on with my routine. My question is, with all the death I have seen in 3 tours in Iraq, why do I see 3 people I hardly knew rather than friends I was close to? If I suddenly have the ability to see ghosts, then why don't I see passed relatives or someone I at least knew well? To add, I have not suffered a recent blow to the head or any psychological trauma. I don't think I need to see a " shrink" as one member suggested. I just want to know the reason for it all.

Tim,
Just a theory, but perhaps the 4 of you share the same trauma, and there's a connection somehow. Even though you hardly knew them, spiritual connections can still be forged when you make acquaintances and work the same missions in Iraq.
Please explain in more detail how you saw them, and how you're convinced they were ghosts and not mistaken identities. If you saw them in a mess hall, could you have mistaken someone else for them?
Thanx.

Hi Bob!
To answer your questions most simply would be to reply that each experience is very different. But, I am not a simple person and will gladly answer your questions appropriately.
To begin, most of the ghosts I see are usually transparent to some degree. Some more than others. However, I have had experiences with a few entities -- like the female spirit from my bedroom -- that are as solid as any human being.
Secondly, a majority of the spirits I have been in contact with have interacted the same way most humans do. They walk or move the exact same way. But, I have seen spirits that will float or hover. Very few have I ever seen that hover to an altitude or extreme that I would consider them flying, though. Most of the hovering or floating entities I've seen seem to glide gracefully just a few inches off the floor. And as for going through the roofs. I have seen a ghost hover a top an abandoned house and I once saw a ghost fall through the ceiling and land behind my father's bar in our basement, but I have not seen one go through the roof.
Lastly, I have seen a good majority of human and animal shaped entities but there have been a handful of orbs. When I was younger, my little brother had a quite powerful sixth sense. Over time he has learnt to tone down his sight because the images used to scare him. On a few occassions, when he'd shy away from an area or cry in a room when a light would be turned off, I'd enter the room with a weird feeling and see orbs, mists or a haze that would drift through the room.
So, I do normally see transparent, humanoid, walking figures. But, I have seen many other variations of spirits in my life.

Thanks. That was clear enough. I find the variation interesting, because Mary Ann Winkowski (aka Ghost Whisperer) always see them in human form. But when you take photographs, they appear as orbs most of the time.
I've dealt with spirits of 3 elderly people that hovered in a ceiling corner of a bedroom. I suppose they were in orb form. I couldn't see them, but I certainly felt their presence. I saw vague images of their faces in my minds eye. There's no way they could occupy such a small space in full bodied form.

| Bob in the instances when I see these 3 individuals, it is always daylight. hav eseen them indoors as well as out. I look and they are there, standing, stareing at me . No emotion,no expressions, no movement, just standing there. They don't levitate,or go thru walls ,there's no sound from them just their images. I have seen the woman with 1 of the men twice and all separate several times. No one else appears just these 3. I lost a dear friend 2 years ago in battle and have not seen him or anyone else I was close to. There's no mistaken who they are, nor that they are not real,in the sense that you and I are real. So I came to a parnormal site at the behest of an aquaintence. What I'm finding is helpful in understanding how all this works, except the guy here who said I needed to talk to a shrink. I'll listen to any rational explainations anyone cares to give.

| Welcome and glad you joined. Not having that blessing or curse, as one chooses to look at it, I can appreciate how odd it can be. Sorta like driving backward through the main gate at Fort Bragg in N.C. with the base security after your car. I know folks that claim they can do what you say you can do and I have never had that to happen. I can, do and have seen ghosts for years, used to scare me silly but now anytime I come across any, which is fairly often, as I do "ghost hunting" for fun and try to collect vqarious objects that have some paranormal attachment to them, esp. if that is a ghost(s). Mine are pretty relaxed, no screaming through the house, rattling chains, moving things when company is over just to see how they react, etc. I think most just exist at some level, not that we can communicate, not really sure if I want to get inside the head of one anyway and it probably has no great desire to know what I'm thinking either. Think of yourself as "gifted" and be happy learninng to enjoy the company you seem to have gained.:)

Kachisa I don't find this fellow funny just odd. When a monitor tells some new member to go talk to a psychologist about their problem that is not very welcoming. Someone said in another post that this site seems to be dieing or something to that effect, maybe this is why.
Kachisa I don't find this fellow funny just odd. When a monitor tells some new member to go talk to a psychologist about their problem that is not very welcoming. Someone said in another post that this site seems to be dieing or something to that effect, maybe this is why.
psst, moderators can see members IP adresses. Just because you create a different account, it doesnt mean the mods don't know who you are. I guess my professor of psychology joke is making a little more sense now, huh? Or, maybe its something that only a private investigator could figure out.
