These events happened just as I am about to tell them to you. They are true and at the time deeply disturbing.
I met my roommate while working at a department store. We became fast friend and soon after we became roommates. Deidra was from up North and I was born and raised in the South and our views on most things differed. Except that is for the exsistence of ghost. Through a series of events that took place in our apartment we both became believers.
We live in a one bedroom apartment in a highrise that at one time had been a retirement home complete with beauty palor that the little old ladies still visited once a week to get their hair done. Deidra had been very eager for me to move in with her even though it was only one bedroom. She promised that as soon as her lease was up we could move into a two bedroom apartment and that for now we could convert the living room into my bedroom seeing as she didn't have any furniture in it. I needed a place to stay, so I was all for it.
Well not long after I moved in I could swear that someone was watching me, even when I knew no one was home but me. The feeling became so overwhelming at times that I would leave our apartment and sit in the lobby until Deidra returned home. Other times I would swear I saw a shadow moving in the corner of my room, but as quickly as I would see it...it would be gone. Then came the footsteps.
One evening Deidra and I were standing in front of the long bathroom mirror talking about things we didn't like about our bodies and what we would change. We were laughing and having a good old time until it sounded like someone was walking down the hall towards the bathroom. We went silent looking at each other with the same bewildered look. The footsteps stopped. Deidra standing closest to the door poked her head out to see if someone was indeed coming down the hall. Nothing.
We stayed quiet for a minute, almost scared to speak. Then in a very hushed toned Deidra said. "Girl, I swear sometimes..." and she stopped. I knew what she wanted to say but I needed to hear her say it first. She listened to air again as if waiting to hear something then she continued, "sometimes I feel like someone is in here watching us." I let out a sigh of relief when she said it.
"I know." I added, "It feels like...you know how when some guy is staring at you in a dirty way. Only this thing feels like it might do something to you." Her eyes watered as she began to tell me about things that happened before I moved in. She said that she would wake from sleep in the middle of the night to the sound of footsteps that seem to stop at the foot of her bed and something unseen seemed to be standing there with unseen eyes piericing into her. She would leave all of the lights on in the morning only to arrive from work to find them all turned off. She also said she had an incident were she walked out of the bathroom and left the door open but when she returned to the bathroom the door was closed. The whole time she spoke in a hushed tone as if trying not to let someone or something else hear her.
We traded stories for a good while and I fell asleep in her room on the floor. In the wee hours of the next morning, I was awaken by the sound of footsteps walking past Deidra's bedroom door. I stared into the darkened hallway frozen with fear, expecting to see someone or something walk past. Nothing. I lay with my eyes closed but fully awake until I heard Deidra's alarm clock go off.
Some of Deidra's friend from New York stopped by on a return trip from Florida. They needed a place to crash and we were more than happy to oblige. We decided to sleep in the living room, so that we could lay around and they could catch up on old times. After everyone has gone to sleep the footsteps began. I usually would only hear them once a night, but tonight they seeemed to be pacing back and forth. They seemed to walk out of the bathroom, down the hall to the living room stop for a second and return to the bathroom. I tried hard to ignore the sounds until one of Deidra guest said, "Whoever keeps going to the bathroom need to lay down and go to sleep." I turned the lamp next to my bed on and to our surprise everyone was still lying on his or her make shift mattress. Needless to say our visitors left at daybreak the next morning.
Days turned into months and I became somewhat accustomed to our ghost(it seems strange to say that now). I had gotten into the habit of even talking "dirty" to it when I felt like it was watching me. I felt like it was a male spirit because whenever I would get undressed I strongly felt his presence. Deidra thought I was crazy and warned me not to "mess with" the thing . I ignored her because the presence seemed to be more friendly since I had started talking to him.
Halloween came around and I decided that I wasn't going to spend the night in our haunted house. I packed an overnight bag and went to spend the night with relatives. Deidra lay snoring in her bed when I left. I turned off all the lights and left. Around 5:00am I got tired of my little cousin kicking me in her sleep and decided to return home.
Imagine my shock to find that the chain lock was on the door. I rang the doorbell and called out to Deidra through the cracked door. She opened the door dazed and confused. "Why'd you put the chain on the door. I told you I'd be before you got up." I asked throwing my bag on my bed.
Deidra stood motionless for a moment just staring at the front door. I called her name and nothing. Then she turned around slowly as if she were afraid to take her eyes away from the, she walked over to the bed and sat down. As I started to question her about what was wrong she grabbed my hand and said "he locked it." I tried to smile as if this was not a big deal but my heart started pounding hard.
"I thought you were here...I heard you come in!" she said becoming more frantic with each breathe. "I heard the door open...oh god...I heard the door open, then close. I said your name but you didn't say anything. I saw... you walk by and go into the bathroom, turn the light on and then back off. I layed back down. But then I heard you...it... lock the top lock...it locked it and I even heard you get on your bed. I heard you..." she said and tears just rolled down her cheeks.
I didn't know what to say, so in a joking voice I called out to the ghost and said "See what you did. You really upset Deidra. Why did you do that to her?"
To my horror, I got a response. In deep almost muted but very audible voice something responded "SHE DOESN'T LIKE ME."
So, needless to say, Deidra and I left the apartment that morning and spent the next week with her aunt. I told Deidra that I was going to move back home, because that thing had talked to us. It had taken on my form to fool Deidra and seemed to be growing stronger. We knew we couldn't keep staying with her aunt, who thought we were crazy, but I had made my mind up that I was leaving.
It just so happened that Deidra had convinced her long distance boyfriend to move in with us until her lease was up in a couple of months. I was afraid to return to the apartment but a big part of me wanted to see how the spirit would respond to Joel being in the apartment. I bit the bullet and returned to the apartment on the same day that Joel was moving his stuff in.
Nothing. Nothing happened. I stayed awake most of the night just waiting to hear footsteps. My ears were on high alert, listening intently to the darknest but nothing. The next two months went by with not a word from the ghost. It was gone, but why? I thought about it only as a second thought.
It was about a week before moving and we had packed up most of our thing. Deidra, Joel and I sat in the kitchen talking about the usual nonsense. I don't know why I brought it up, but I did. I looked at Joel and said, "You know we had a ghost here before you came." With that statement events of the past six months just poured out of Deidra and myself. Then I made the mistake of saying, "He must be scared of you Joel, because we haven't heard from him since you got here." We all laughed at the thought and soon went to bed.
As I lay in bed half awake, half sleep I could hear someone coming down the hall towards the living room. I had grown accustomed to Joel going outside to smoke at night so I didn't even bother to open my eyes. But these footsteps didn't turn to go towards the door. They were coming toward the bed. Toward me. All of a sudden I became afraid. I knew these footsteps and they didn't belong to Joel. The heavy slow moving steps of our old friend. I could feel my breathe getting heavy and my heart was pounding so hard I could hear it. They footsteps stopped right beside my bed and I could feel that familar unrelenting stare. "Don't open you eyes. Don't open you eyes." I repeated over and over in my head. There was an eerie silence for a moment.
Then I felt it...It GRABBED my thigh. It was a hand...a man's hand and he grabbed my leg with such a force that I opened my eyes and stared into the darkness praying to see Joel playing a trick on me. Nothing. Complete darkness. I let out a scream that could have woke the dead. I could hear Deidra and Joel both spilling out of bed and running down the hall to see what was happening. They entered the room both half awake to find me still screaming and throwing things into a duffle bag.
"He touched me! He freakin touched me!." I screamed moving around the room like an insane person. Joel protested. "Not you stupid! HIM. OH MY GOD HE TOUCHED ME!!!!" I screamed. Deidra was trying to calm me down when the hysteria was broken by a knock on the door. We all immediately went silent and I honestly expected to see the ghost on the other side of the door. It was just our neighbor, who'd heard me screaming and was just checking on us.
Deidra somehow convinced me to stay the rest of the night and even spent the night in bed with me. Joel camped out on the floor. I stayed up the whole night...afraid. I drifted off to sleep the next morning as Deidra was getting ready for work. I decided I'd get a couple hours or sleep and then get my stuff moved out. Joel woke me up about lunch time and went outside to smoke.
I pulled the covers over my head and lay there on my back thinking about what had happened last night. I wondered if I had upset the ghost with that comment I had made about it being afraid of Joel. But then I heard them again...the footsteps. They crossed the living room quickly this time and before I knew it , IT WAS ON TOP OF ME. It was heavy and it felt like a grown man holding me down. I tried with every fiber of my being to pull the covers down. I started screaming and fighting with whatever was holding me down. Fear and desperation sweep over me as tears started to run down my cheeks.
I had just about given up all hope, when I heard the front door open and just like that it was gone. "I could hear you screaming all the way down the hall." Joel said as I slide on a pair of jeans. "What's going on? Where are you going."
With keys and purse in hand I told Joel what had happened. I was too scared to stay in the apartment one minute longer. I left the apartment with nothing but the clothes on my back, my purse and piggy bedroom slippers. I had Deidra and Joel move my things into our new apartment because I vowed to never return to that apartment again.
